Candle Workshop in Central Village March 27, 2002
This was a workshop dedicated to the magickal uses of candles. We started
by discussing the many ways that candles are used in our culture.
Birthday Candles
Anniversary Candles
Candlelight Dinner
Menorah Candles
Petition Candles
Novena Candles
Aromatherapy Candles
Shabbos Candles
Altar Candles
Then we discussed the magickal uses of candles. Candles can be used to
invoke deities, elements and energies. Candles can be prepared to either
draw or banish energies or events. They can draw love, or banish fear.
Candles can draw a new job or money, or banish a bad habit.
We thought about the many kinds of candles that can be used. Tapers, of all
sizes, shaped candles, birthday candles and hand-rolled beeswax candles are
some examples.
We explored ways of choosing the type of candle, as well as its color.
There are many ways to color a white candle, including dripping melted wax
from a crayon or colored candle. Candle color is significant because it
helps to intensify and strengthen the energy that you are drawing or
banishing.
We discussed some common color associations.
Red: passion, love, anger, vitality
Green, Gold, Silver: Prosperity
Yellow: Confidence
Pink or Blue: True Love
White: Safety, Protection
Purple: Psychic Development
Beeswax candles can be rolled by hand, and infused with herbs and oil.
Beeswax sheets are available in craft stores.
Candles can be inscribed with runes and other worlds or symbols to help
strengthen their energy.
Candles should be anointed with oil as a final step of preparation. Most
people agreed that sage, rosemary and lavender were good all-purpose herbs
for magick.
As an exercise, each person prepared a candle to take home. We ended the
evening by charging our candles with a guided meditation.
