Tarot Circle met for the first time November 15, with a morning session at
10 AM and an evening session at 7 PM. The topic for both groups was The Major
Arcana.
Morning Group
Morning Group had a wide variety of decks, which became a focus of
study. Looking at the Major Arcana from Waite, Crow's Magick,
Hanson-Roberts, Spiral, Crowley and Visconti-Sforza decks, the group defined
path lessons and interpretations for each of the Major Arcana cards. Of
particular interest were discussions of The High Priestess as Pope Joan, Virgin
Mary and the Goddess, The Emperor as a politician, or, originally, the Holy
Roman Emperor, the Hierophant Reversed as Abbie Hoffman, and Magician as
Alchemist and Temperance as Alchemy (and a darn difficult thing to attain!).
We closed our session with a game of "Gifts and Secrets" from the Tarot Games
book. In this game each player chooses four cards at random, but does not
let the other players see them. Each card is played and interpreted, each player
finds insight, and the group finds a sense of community. Great game!
Evening Session
Evening session had more people than Morning Session, so we focused on larger
group exercises. We started by simply reading for each other, and then quickly
went through the Major Arcana definitions from the morning session, adding some
new definitions to it as well. Then we studied the Major Arcana 1-21 in
groups of three, or triads. Each person was responsible for discussing the
progression of at least one group of three, such as Magician, High Priestess,
Empress, or Tower, Star, Moon.
We then read for each other using only Major Arcana Cards, and played a round
of Major Arcana charades. Each person had to embody a Major Arcana
character, and the rest of the group had to guess who they were. The group
was stumped when J. got up and started taking off her clothes! Of course,
she was "Changing," and embodying Card 13, Death. The group closed the
session with a game of "Gifts and Secrets."
